The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1)The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My reaction from the point I saw the name of this book to the day I finished it.

Huh. Okay. Cool cover. MOVING ON!
Ugh, this showed up on recommendations again? What’s it about, anyway?
OH MY GOSH I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!

Yeah …. there were no in-betweens. Sorry. Basically, I saw the book, ignored it for a while, then it just kept popping up again and again! After a while it annoyed me so I read the reviews and was like, “Whatever, I guess I’ll give it a shot.” And then ….
BAM!
It pretty much went just like that. I loved the book. Absolutely adored it! It had one of the most interesting and unique plots I’ve read in a long time. And to think I was starting to lose hope in my fellow dystopian-loving authors! Well done, Ms. Bracken, I salute thee.

One of my favorite aspects of the story was that they used quotes from another book! Watership Down.

All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But they must catch you, digger, listening, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

Ruby is this amazing heroine and all-around great character. She is strong in ways she hasn’t learned yet and she knows how to deal with torment and tormenters. All she wants is to undo what she has done in the past but she can’t. So Ruby is stuck at this camp with a bunch of other people like her. Only, they aren’t like her. Ruby is one of the last remaining Oranges.

When Ruby manages to escape with the help of a League agent, she goes on the run. She gets away from the League agent and meets up with Liam.

Liam, oh, Liam! Wow, what a character! He is definitely one of my favorite heroes in any of the books I’ve read. He has a sense of compassion to him. He’s protective, loyal, strong, and cunning. Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that he’s beautiful!

*Sigh*

But the story doesn’t just end with them running around aimlessly, no. They have a mission. So Liam, Zu, Chubs, and Ruby set off to find this camp where tons of kids like them have gathered under a very influential, Clancy. [Psh, I’m not telling you how he became so influential, you’ll just have to read the book!]

Needless to say, the camp isn’t exactly what everybody was hoping for. In a tale of twists and turns and love and hate and hardships and peace, Ruby makes the perfect heroine! And everybody remains intact … mostly.

[insert maniacal laughter]
